When We Are Married at the Garrick Theatre

Maureen Lipman stars in JB Priestley's classic comedy When We Are Married at London's Garrick Theatre.

About When We Are Married

Set in Northern England in 1908, When We Are Married is a classic British comedy based on plenty of stiff upper lip, class division and hypocrisy.

Three respectable couples tied the knot on the same day in the same village church. Twenty-five years later, they meet up again to celebrate 25 years of happy marriage. But soon they realise their marriages are invalid as the local vicar was not licensed at the time of their nuptials.

The couples struggle to keep their secret quiet and maintain their respectable standing in the close-knit community. But soon a local journalist arrives smelling a rat...

Can the couples keep their secret safe?

Christopher Luscombe (Spamalot and History Boys) directs J B Priestley's play at the Garrick Theatre.

The 2010 production of When We Are Married is the first of the play in London for 25 years. It was last performed at the Whitehall Theatre (now the Trafalgar Studios) in 1985.

Three highly respectable couples - the Parkers, Soppitts and Helliwells - married on the same day, at the same church, and by the same vicar, are celebrating 25 years of wedded bliss. Out of the blue, disaster strikes, their vicar wasn't licensed? They've merely been living together all these years!

At a stroke, all the cherished certainties of their lives start to unravel. Can our three couples hide their shameful secret? Can they cling on to their hard-won standing in the community?
