About The Million Dollar Quartet

It is a rock musical based on an impromptu jam session at Sun Records studio on 4th December 1956.

Carl Perkins, already a star after his rendition of Blue Suede Shoes became a hit turned up at the studio with his brothers Clayton and Jay and their drummer to work on some new material. The owner of Sun Records Sam Phillips decided to bring in a virtually unknown singer/pianist called Jerry Lee Lewis to play at the Perkins' session.

A former Sun artist Elvis Presley had moved to RCA but soon after the session started he happened to pop in to see everyone. He listened to a playback of Perkins' recording and liked it so he went into the studio to join them. Later another Sun artist Johnny Cash popped in and decided to go into the studio as well. Phillips phoned the local paper the Memphis Press Scimitar and told them the story and they published a piece about the jam session the next day with the heading "The Million Dollar Quartet," So the musical tells the story of the night in 1956 when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis came together at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions in music history.

The show features many of the best rock songs including Blue Suede Shoes, Sixteen Tons, Great Balls of Fire, Walk the Line and more such as Fever, That's All Right, Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, Who Do You Love? And Hound Dog.
