Sally Dexter will be playing The Mother Superior in Sister Act at the London Palladium from the 1st September 2010.

Sally takes over from Whoppi Goldberg whose West End debut ends on the 31st August. Sally Dexter will be playing the role until Sister Act closes in London on October 30th 2010.

Most recently Dexter appeared in Billy Elliot The Musical as Mrs. Wilkinson. Before these she has also appeared in Bad Girls The Musical, has worked extensively with both the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre and has won the Laurance Olivier Award in 1986 for Most Promising Newcomer.

Starring Sheila Hancock, Patina Miller

Sister Act will be looking for a new London home for the production after it closes at the London Palladium on 30 October 2010 to make way for the upcoming production of The Wizard Of Oz. Sister act will tour the UK and open internationally with productions planned for Broadway, Germany and across the globe.

Simon Webbe joins the cast as Shank from 31 May 2010.

It has now been announced that the original Whoopi Goldberg will be joining the cast of Sister Act The Musical for a strictly limited season at The London Palladium this summer taking over from Sheila Hancock in the role of Mother Superior.

Whoopi Goldberg who played the original Deloris van Cartier in the original 1992 Sister Act film will make her West End debut from the 1st of August until the 31st August 2010, but not between the 16th and 23rd August 2010

This may be Whoopi Goldberg’s debut West End performance but she is certainly no stranger to the stage with Broadway credits which include A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Xanadu. And on the big screen she has starred in Jumpin’ Jack Flash, The Lion King, The Color Purple and she won an Oscar for her performance in Ghost.

London stage regular Sally Dexter will become the West End’s latest nun when she takes over Sister Act’s Mother Superior duties from Whoopi Goldberg at the beginning of September.

Bill Tayler commented “The Sister Act journey has been an incredible one so far, and Whoopi’s input from the development stage onwards has been invaluable. Now, back in her habit and on stage with our company at the beautiful Palladium, theatregoers get to see a comedy legend at work. To say the Sister Act family is excited might be something of an understatement! This is also a chance to say a goodbye to the indomitable, multi-talented and unspeakably wonderful Sheila Hancock, who has been a mother figure both on and off stage. I can never thank her enough for her part in making the show the success it is today.”

Goldberg will be joining an award winning cast which includes Patina Miller, former Blue member, Simon Webbe and former Eastenders and Dad’s army star, Ian Lavender.

Sister Act on Broadway

Patina Miller, who was nominated for an Olivier Award for her performance as Deloris Van Cartier, the undercover nun who’s secretly an aspiring disco star, when “Sister Act” was presented at the London Palladium, will reprise that role on Broadway, press representatives for the show said on Monday. This latest production of the musical will begin previews at the Broadway Theater on March 24 and open on April 20. It features a score composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and will be directed by Jerry Zaks.
