100th Anniversary of the London Palladium

The London Palladium

The London Palladium opened on Boxing Day 1910, The London Palladium is a 2,270 seat West End Theatre which is located just off Oxford Street in the City of Westminster.

The theatre started out life known as The Palladium - a venue for premier variety performances, it was taken over by George Black in 1928 and believe it or not was used as a cinema for 3 months.

The theatre became known as The London Palladium from 1934.

When Val Parnell took on the theatre as Managing Director in 1945 he adopted a controversial yet successful policy of booking high profile acts. These acts included Judy Garland, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.

Still under the control of Parnell between 1955 and 1967 the theatre was to become the home of the highly successful ITV variety show Sunday Night at the London Palladium first hosted by Tommy Trinder and then Bruce Forsyth. It was this programme amongst other TV appearances that have played a major part in making the theatre one of the most well known in the UK.

In 2000, The London Palladium changed hands to it’s current owners - Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group where it has played host to a variety of musicals like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound of Music.
